Safety and advisories

A short, honest list of things worth knowing before you use CamNexo, including what is not finished yet.

Last updated: 31 October 2026

Use trusted networks only

The connection is not encrypted yet. The video travels in the clear between your phone and your computer, and the computer accepts a connection from any device on the network that reaches it. Treat CamNexo like a camera on your local network.

  • Use it on your home or office Wi-Fi, or a hotspot you control.
  • Avoid public, hotel, café, school and other shared networks.
  • Close the desktop app when you are not using it. It stops listening for phones.
  • On a firewall prompt, allow CamNexo on private networks only.

Pairing and encryption are the next security work planned. This page will say when they ship.

Streaming a camera can capture other people. Tell people when they may be on camera, do not point it at places where people expect privacy, and follow the laws and workplace rules where you are. While CamNexo is streaming, the phone shows a notification and the system's camera indicator.

Early-access builds

  • Not code-signed yet. Windows may show a SmartScreen or “unknown publisher” warning. Only install builds that you downloaded from this website or received directly from us, and check the address in your browser first.
  • Expect rough edges. Please report them.
  • CamNexo is not affiliated with Zoom, Google, Microsoft or OBS, and an update to those apps or to your operating system can affect it.

The Windows virtual camera

On Windows 11 the desktop app adds a camera called “CamNexo” by registering a small component with the system. That step needs administrator permission once. Because it runs inside Windows' camera service, you may occasionally see that service restart; this is normal behaviour when a camera component is replaced or stops.

The Windows installer also adds a firewall rule that lets phones reach CamNexo on private networks only. To remove everything, uninstall CamNexo from Windows Settings, Apps. The uninstaller removes the virtual camera, its files and the firewall rule.

Heat, battery and background use

  • High resolutions (1440p and 4K) make the phone work harder. If it gets hot, choose a lower size or Auto, and keep it out of direct sun.
  • Streaming for a long time drains the battery. Plug in for long sessions.
  • CamNexo keeps streaming when you switch apps and shows a notification with a Stop button. Some phone makers stop background apps aggressively; if that happens, exclude CamNexo from battery optimisation in your phone's settings.

Known limitations

AreaToday
ComputersWindows 11 only. macOS and Linux are in development.
PhonesAndroid only. iPhone is planned.
SecurityNo pairing and no encryption yet.
AudioVideo only. Use your computer's or a headset's microphone.
NetworksPhone and computer must reach each other. Guest Wi-Fi and “client isolation” settings on a router can block that.
QualityThe available sizes depend on your phone. Wi-Fi quality affects smoothness, especially at 4K.
